Our Beliefs

Eastside Covenant Church is part of a larger denomination or network of churches called the Evangelical Covenant Church, or simply the “Covenant” as we affectionately call it. Part of what makes our denomination unique is that we allow what we call “freedom in Christ” on a number of subjects, which means that we are free to disagree on any number of topics. On the essentials of faith we hold to unity and on the non-essentials we offer one another freedom. You may be thinking “well doesn’t that get messy?” The answer to that is: yes. It does get messy at times, although it is a beautiful mess and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We do our best to hold our convictions “lightly” and to act charitably towards those who have come to a different understanding, by design it makes us a very diverse community which is just the way we like it.

Here are a list of six theological “affirmations” in descending order of importance that our denomination as a whole has adopted:

  • The centrality of the word of God
  • The necessity of the new birth
  • The commitment to the whole mission of the Church
  • The Church as a fellowship of believers
  • The conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit
  • The reality of freedom in Christ

Affirmations like these are not to be taken as creedal statements. They are rather to be understood as true and valid descriptions of what Covenanters believe and cherish as they continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and of his Christ, and “he shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).
